2004 London Gatherings

2004 was exciting year because we consolidated our identity, established a Manchester chapter and in London, moved to the National Liberal Club - possibly the fanciest venue in town! See below for a fascinating variety of speakers such as Julia Cleverdon, Harriet Harman, Louise Berridge, Judge Brenda Hale, Hilary Wainwright and topics such as participative democracy, domestic violence, nudity, leadership, networking.

How to be an effective leader: Seminar with Julia Cleverdon, CEO of Business in the Community

16th February
THINKINGWOMEN TAKE ACTION: Increase your Confidence. There are few of us who wouldn't benefit from an extra boost in confidence. Join Thinkingwomen resident coaches Holly Crane and Geraldine Morel for the evening. (We are charging £10 for this event to cover material costs).

26th February

An evening discussion with Baroness Betty Boothroyd. Elected as a Labour MP for West Bromwich in 1973, she has had an extraordinarily colourful and varied political career, culminating in spending eight years as Speaker in the House of Commons from 1992-2000.

Dr Faouzi Khatir is certified in neuro-linguistic programming and neuro semantics and will run an interactive session on how to apply their principles to enhance an individual's potential.

Lis Astall, Accenture UK Managing Director.
Lis has been with Accenture for 21 years and as the UK Managing Director has covered all the company's public and private sector business. In the UK Accenture employs 11,700 people and annual revenues for FY05 were $2.56bn. During the seminar Lis will talk about the successes and challenges she has faced throughout her career and what it takes to manage a complex and constantly changing business. 30th March
Who is 21st century woman? An evening of brainstorming, discussion and defining topics for future thinkingwomen in Manchester gatherings.

22nd April
Women in Local Government. Councillor Kath Robinson, Deputy Leader at Manchester City Council shares her experience of 20 years as councillor and part of local government.

16th June
Inside the Equal Opportunities Commission. Amanda Ariss, Head of Policy at the EOC talks about challenges in merging issues of discrimination, future challenges and the current focus points on gender.

22nd July (new date)
New forms of democracy. Hilary Wainwright, author of Reclaim the state: Experiments in popular democracy and editor of Red Pepper talks about practices in different parts of the world that have made democracy more sexy. She will also discuss whether different democratic models can be usefully identified as 'feminine' and 'masculine'

1st September
Voter apathy: why bother with regional government in the North West? In conversation with Ruth Turner, an award-winning social entrepreneur, with interests that span sustainable development, innovation in science and the arts, health and social issues, social businesses, and renewing interest in democracy. Ruth is a founding director of social research and public involvement company Vision 21 and a director of Sustainability North West. Biog

Andrea Cooper, Manchester Regional Director of Common Purpose will be talking about What makes a good leader, particularly from a female perspective

22nd November
Brigit Egan, career and change management consultant will talk about How to network without 'networking'. Do you find networking events annoying? You don't want to be fake but want to talk to people about your work and to progress in your career. Brigit will discuss how to network naturally, in a way that you are comfortable with and that doesn't come across as a hard sell. Biog
